Kitchen Gadget of the Week: Sprouting Jars

In this week’s installment of Kitchen Gadget of the Week, we are featuring something that brings you fresh, tasty veggies right on your kitchen counter! If you like the sound of that, then this is for you! Kitchen Gadget of the Week #4: Sprouting Jars!

What it Does and Why We Like It

Growing your own sprouts is a great way to incorporate fresh, healthful, and live food into your diet! With a relatively small effort, you can have a steady supply of a delicious and economical vegetable right from the kitchen counter. The process is very simple and we show you how in our post How To Grow Sprouts.

We have a pair of simple, and rather high-capacity, glass sprouting jars (pictured below) with stainless steel lids and screens. They do have a plastic insert on the lid, which isn’t our favorite, that seems to keep the lid screwing down easily. But you can make a sprouting jar from something as common as a mason jar with cheesecloth and a rubber band.

We love that we can grow a giant batch of sprouts in these jars!

What Is Our Fav Recipe To Use This For?

Sprouts are commonly associated with salads, right? Well, we love them on our’s for sure, but we really enjoy them in sandwiches and wraps. So we have to say that our fav recipe to use them in has to be our  Better Than Tuna Chickpea Salad. Believe us, you will love the combo (and maybe add a little avocado and toast the bread, mmmm)!

Where Can You Get It?

Of course, you can just use (or re-use) a mason jar with some cheesecloth, but purpose-made sprouting jars can be found at most natural food stores and some supermarkets. If you would rather order online, or find a place that you know carries the type you are looking for, here are some options:

  • The minimalist type one we have can be found here on Now Foods, which also has other interesting products.
  • Another site with several versions of sprouting jars, as well as other resources for sprouting is Sprout People.
  • Here’s a big giant page of them at Amazon (including the ones we have from Now Foods) so you should be able to find the exact style for you!
